The City of Toronto's Sewers By-law guidance states that nothing other than rain and melted snow should ever enter a catch basin, and advises washing a vehicle with a pail and cloth so the wash water can be contained and poured to the sanitary sewer rather than run to the storm drain.

That is the method we use anyway: controlled water, contained at the vehicle, rather than a hose running to the nearest storm drain.

TRCA reports the Highland Creek watershed lies almost entirely within the City of Toronto at roughly 102 square kilometres, is the most urbanized watershed in the Toronto region with just 6% of its area forested and only 11.4% of the landscape remaining as natural cover — among the lowest in TRCA's jurisdiction — that approximately 9% of the watershed has stormwater management controls, and that during heavy rainfall the high volume and velocity of water causes erosion, flooding and habitat damage while runoff carries garbage, oil and gas, fertilizers and pesticides directly into watercourses.

This is the most heavily built-up watershed in the region and only about a tenth of it has any stormwater treatment at all, so what goes down a drain here largely arrives in the creek as it left — which is exactly why we capture what comes off a vehicle instead of rinsing it to the kerb.

TRCA states the Scarborough Bluffs are comprised of various sediments including silt, sand and clay, and are unstable due to several natural processes including wave action from Lake Ontario, surface water runoff and over-steepening of the slope face from precipitation, wind and the freeze-thaw cycle; the Scarborough Waterfront Project covers the shoreline between Bluffer's Park and East Point Park.

The shoreline here is an actively worked bluff of silt, sand and clay, with wind and the freeze-thaw cycle among the forces on it, and waterfront works run from Bluffer's Park east to East Point Park — so conditions and access along that stretch genuinely change season to season.

Parks Canada reports Rouge National Urban Park is home to 1,700 species including more than 1,000 plant species, 247 bird species, 73 fish species, 44 mammal species and 27 reptile and amphibian species, contains 42 species at risk, includes habitat types such as forests, thickets, meadows, wetlands, rivers and agricultural fields, and lies at the northern edge of the Carolinian Life Zone.

The east side of the city runs into a national urban park of forest, wetland, river and working farmland, and vehicles used around it collect a different kind of soiling from a purely urban commute — trail dust, mud and organic material rather than only road film.
